Japan Tour—August, 1984

Preceded by a feature in Japan’s Swing Journal, this tour was really a ball. Gary filled in for Charlie Haden, and immediately got into the music and added his own special stamp. We started at the Edmonton, Alberta Jazz Festival, and began our Japanese tour the next day. We were picked up at the airport and rushed to the venue barely in time to play. The rest of the tour was much more sedate, with concerts every other night, and plenty of time to explore Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, and Kyoto with the aid of a personal translator/guide. Apart from some really great music, and very appreciative audiences, the highlights for me were a classic Kaiseki banquet in Kyoto that lasted 5 hours, and our last dinner in Japan where I had my first taste of Kobe beef.
